I’m seriously considering an ice cream maker.
This only took 10 hours. Not even half a day and you can have delicious frozen yogurt in your belly! Only 10 hours of your time to make frozen yogurt! You’ve got time, haven’t you? What else are you gonna do?
Of course, with an ice cream maker, it does all the work for you, so what’s the fun in that?! I’ll post a recipe without an ice cream maker and with one. You decide your method of torture.

Don’t worry, it will not take you 10 hours, it just took ME 10 hours. Probably 6-8 hours for you. Because I got bored waiting for it to freeze, went out to dinner, came back and had to start over again. Do you hear the little violin playing the sad sad song?
My version of Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt (makes 1 quart)
Ingredients:

6 cups yogurt (I used low fat yogurt, but other recipes call for Greek-style or whole milk yogurt)

1/3 cup sugar
Directions without a machine:
1) Using a large fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl, pour 6 cups of yogurt into the strainer. This will make approx. 3 cups of strained yogurt.
2) Cover top of bowl with plastic wrap, set in refrigerator for 2 hours as it drains.
3) Take out of fridge, discard water. Mix yogurt and sugar together. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
4) Take out of fridge, stir, put into freezer for 45 minutes. Take out, stir, put back into freezer for 30 minutes. Keep doing this in 30 minute increments until it is the consistency of firm frozen yogurt. Serve immediately, or store in airtight containers.
Directions with a machine:
Follow steps 1-3 above.
4) Follow manufacturer’s instructions on how to freeze in the ice cream maker.

I couldn’t find Greek-style yogurt anywhere. I looked at the supermarkets, at Sam’s club, even at Aldi’s. Nowhere to be found. So I just used low fat yogurt. If you find Greek-style yogurt, by all means use it. Mine still tasted pretty good though…really tart.
Set up a large fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl.
Cover with plastic wrap and drain the yogurt for 2 hours in the fridge.
After two hours you should see the liquid drain to the bottom. Yum.
Dump the strained yogurt into a clean bowl, add sugar.
Mix together. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
Take out of refrigerator. Mix, then store in the freezer for 45 minutes. Admire the way I organize my freezer.
Take out of the freezer, whip, put back for 30 minutes. Keep doing this until it is the consistency of firm yogurt (should take around 4 hours). Serve immediately.
Or store in airtight containers. I suggest serving immediately because when I stored the leftovers it got a little too firm, and I had to wait for it to defrost a little bit before I could dig into it.
And top with your favorite fruits or cereal just the way Pinkberry does. It would’ve been awesome if I had the white paper cups they serve it in, but all I had was this fancy looking goblet.
For the very few of you who will probably attempt this, enjoy! If you don’t attempt this, I will totally understand.


I have an ice cream machine and absolutely love it… it definitely makes it easier to make ice cream. I’ve never tried to make frozen yogurt though, I’ll have to do that next time!

I broke down and bought an ice cream maker. Worth every penny. Sure it takes time (mainly waiting for the mix to chill) but the results are so much better than anything you can buy at the grocery store. Besides, I’m a bit too lazy — I mean busy — to make it without one.

Chiara – I’ve only made ice cream 3 times ever, so I don’t know if I’ll really use a machine enough to make it worth the money. But yes, frozen yogurt is a LOT easier than ice cream.

Charmian – Hey I rather wait for it to chill and let the machine do the work, rather than take it out of the freezer repeatedly to stir it. I say that now…but in a couple months…I’ll end up doing it without a machine all over again.

You have a lot of patience to make frozen yogurt without a machine. I had Pinkberry last weekend. It was better than I remembered.
Unless I get an ice cream maker….never again.
I’m trying to decide which would be more worth it – making this recipe at home without an ice cream maker, straight up buying an ice cream maker, or continuing to spend upwards of $30 a week on Pinkberry.

$30 a week on Pinkberry?! If I lived near a Pinkberry I would probably spend the same, if not more. The recipe is easy enough to try, it’s just the amount of effort that is the issue :)

This looks fab, and so easy. Can’t wait to try it! I make my own “Greek” yogurt every week for breakfasts, so now I have something more interesting to do with it :)

Thank you so much for actually posting a picture of what type of sugar you used!! I wanted to make some last week and searched the internet but all the recipes just stated ‘sugar’ and I didn’t know if I needed super fine, caster, granulated or icing/powdered! At least I know it’s a normal type of sugar so I’m going to attempt this now with caster sugar. Thanks :-)

I just made this tonight without a machine and it turned out really well. It did not take as much time and effort as it seems. Either way it is worth it, I put mango and coconut in mine…sooo good.

Does this actually taste like pinkberry? Not to be skeptical, it’s just that…well…Pinkberry is really good. XD
If your still having trouble finding greek yogurt go to costco the always have it there.
