Eniris - The ham is just an option, you can opt meat out entirely if you wished. Turkey sausage would be good, though I'd recommend you cook it separately then add it into the soup as you serve it.

Very good. I've cooked hundreds of pots of split peas
Here are some tricks
1- add salt at the end
2- try adding tablespoon or three of nutritional yeast esp if vegetarian
3- add some kind of cooking oil if vegetarian
4- try garlic and cayenne
5- try adding some frozen peas at the end for a light touch
6- soak the peas at least six hours. Makes cooking easier
7- make sure to serve this hot in the winter...a real warmer upper
8- I like it with some diced raw onion on top
9- Soy sauce adds flavor...if you use it put less salt in the pot

I love peas. I'll pretty much eat soup for lunch every day because it's easy to eat it as I work in front of the computer.

Haha...funny that a couple of you mentioned the weather. It got down to the 70s and I wanted a warm hearty bowl of soup already. :P

I have never actually tried split pea soup... Looks tasty, though. I will definitely give a try once the weather is a bit cooler!

You're welcome Peggy!

Chiara - The ham was from leftovers, actually! My mom gave us the meat, and some pineapples she baked it with, but no bone unfortunately. Great flavor though!

This is one of my favorite soups. We usually make it when we have leftovers from a whole ham and use the bone to make ham stock. If you ever have leftovers from a whole ham try it, it gives it a delicious flavor!
I wish the weather was cooler here already, I miss making soups...
