Yes, I do still speak Italian. I speak it with my friends on the phone and with my parents when my boyfriend is not around. When he's around we speak English so that he can be part of the conversation. If I still live in the U.S. when I have kids I will definitely speak Italian to them so that they learn both languages. And yes, brains are funny things -sometimes in my dreams people from Italy speak perfect English and my American friends perfect Italian!

Memoria - I want to be clear on the disagreement you have with this topic. I totally agree that we should learn more than one language. I never said I wished to only know how to speak one language. I was writing this post to express the difficulty when my family only wanted me to speak Cantonese at home, and how school only wanted me to speak English. I switched back and forth constantly, to the point where it was utterly frustrating. And I wish parents would compromise and let their kids speak TWO languages at home instead of one. That was my point, and I'm sorry if I didn't get that across clearly.

I never meant to throw away my Cantonese either, and I regret that I can't speak as fluent as I could've. But once again, I never meant that Americans should ONLY learn English. It's frustrating to see my friends' children struggling in school with second languages, and the parents complaining about how their kids shouldn't have to learn a second language because it affects their other courses. To me, that's ignorance.

As for my future offspring, they can learn any second (or third) languages they wish. And I would support them.

As a college instructor of the Spanish language, I agree and disagree with you about this topic. I firmly believe people should learn more than one language, and I think it is sad that in the U.S. (America really refers to all countries from Canada to Argentina, so I avoid using "America" when referring to the United States) so many natives are monolingual and think English should be the ONLY language to learn. I hope that your child(ren) learn Cantonese.

I have so many Latino students who wish their parents would have taught or spoken to them in Spanish. I'm not Latino; I was born in the United States and am a descendant of Africa, Ireland, and the Natives of this country. I'm very proud that I know more than one language. I wish had the capacity to learn a million more, too.

Unfortunately, I was born in a monolingual household, and I would have given anything to have grown up learning another language, like an African, Celtic or indigenous language. I understand why it's important to learn English in this country, but I think it is important to acknowledge the importance of learning another language as well.

I commend you for how far you've come; I hope you always take pride in your bilingual skills and pass them along to your offspring.

Debra - Thank you so much!

Chiara - Thank you! It must be great to see your stories in print. Do you still speak in your native language? I practically gave up my native language, I can still understand Cantonese, but the words don't come out of my mouth as easily as they use to. Unless I'm drunk. Or if I'm dreaming, I can speak perfect Cantonese. Brains are a funny thing...

I feel for you. English isn't my first language and I'm extremely proud to have become a journalist in the U.S. Learning English is difficult -especially when you have a lot to say and the words don't come easy. To this day I have a little bit of an accent -one that everyone misinterprets as being either Easter European or Irish- but when I see my stories in print I can't help but think that I have made it. And so have you. Your writing style is great, entertaining and grammatically perfect!

Thanks Irish pirate! I know plenty of people who butcher it as well. And I cringe since I try so hard to sound competent, while they had the chance to begin with, yet take it for granted.

Hear hear! I know plenty of people who were taught English from birth that STILL butcher the language. I always enjoy reading and I always look forward to wherever you take us! If that makes any sense...
