I just want to start by saying, I ate a cow tonight and washed it down with absolut and lemonade. So please bear with me.

This was, by far, the longest drive we’ve experienced. Nearly 9 hours of….well, nothing.

DSC_0008aa

And by nothing, I don’t mean it in a negative way. In fact, I liked seeing miles and miles of fields. I was tired of all the hills in Upstate New York. This was a change for me.

DSC_0023aa

It was peaceful. I liked how there were no surprises over any hills, no congested cities, no traffic that would stress us (er Chris) out.

What’s this?! What kind of monster truck did these tires belong to?! Someone please explain this one to me. I have no clue.

Chris thought these were neat, so he took around 4857 pictures of them.

After driving half the day in Iowa, we finally got to Nebraska.

We had no idea what to expect in Nebraska. Fortunately, it was one of the most pleasantly surprising places we’ve stayed in so far.

Didn’t this look like a tornado would touch down any second?? I know it’s not really tornado season, but I was almost hoping there would be one off in the distance to take a picture of. Of course I shouldn’t wish that at all…since I’m deathly afraid of tornadoes.

We had one of the best meals ever at Whiskey Creek. If you’re ever in North Platte, Nebraska, TRY THIS RESTAURANT FOR A GREAT STEAK.

To start off our dinner, we ordered the Southwest Tootsy Rolls with cream cheese, chives and shrimp that comes with a lime chipotle dipping sauce. I will have to attempt to make these soon. They were fantastic.

The complimentary bread was a fresh, warm marbled pumpernickel and white, served with butter.

Chris ordered a porterhouse with loaded baked potato. This photo doesn’t do it justice. I didn’t let him order dessert afterwards because I feared for his health.

At least it made him happy. If I could blindfold him for his next birthday and drive him back to Nebraska for this, I would.

I ordered the filet mignon wrapped with bacon, grilled vegetables, and loaded baked potato. I finished it ALL. I even got some on my shirt.

I’m not sure if I should be proud of that or not.

The steaks melted like butter in your mouth. Cooked perfectly (mine was medium, his was medium rare) and seasoned lightly so you could appreciate the flavor of the beef. And for the price, how can you beat a porterhouse for $22.99 and a filet mignon for $18.99? We can’t get that in NY anywhere.

I didn’t even mind the country music played in the restaurant all night. In fact, it fit the atmosphere (who would’ve figured?).

Chris really wants ice cream, so off we go again.

Tomorrow – Grand Junction, Colorado.

  1. I’m enjoying virtually going on this trip with you two. I’m looking forward to the next one!

  2. Mmmmm, steak! Yummy. Those tires look like the kind they use on quarry trucks (google images will give you a look). I’m sure there’s other machinery with tires that big though. Stack a few up and you’ve got a 3 story apartment!

  3. Iowa and Nebraska look really boring, or maybe it’s just this time of year. I guess I just love the Finger Lakes hills, with a surprise around every curve.

The big, round hay bales always remind me of Shredded Wheat Muffets. (Do they still make them? Probably not, so I’m dating myself again. ;))

Those tires are nothing short of amazing!

OMG…what a meal! I am so drooling thinking about that beef! (Darn. Shredded wheat and beef. Now I’m hungry. No more SB at night!)

  4. This is where they plant all the genetically modified corn (unsuitable for actually EATING) to make high fructose corn syrup. Thanks for typing all this up! I feel like I am vicariously taking a road trip!-)
